Keys for jet skis, boats and motorcycles live a hard life. They get splashed, dropped, left in pockets and forgotten on docks. A few simple habits can keep yours working and easy to find.

Keep the key away from water and salt

Saltwater is hard on any key, and many modern keys contain a chip or electronics. Rinse the key with fresh water after a day on the water if it was exposed, dry it fully, and store it in a dry place. Do not leave it in a wet pocket or bag.

Use a floating keychain or lanyard

A floating keychain stops a dropped key from sinking, and a wrist or lanyard clip keeps it with you while you ride. Many personal watercraft also use a safety lanyard that clips to the rider, so keep the key and that lanyard together.

Keep a spare, and keep it somewhere else

A spare key is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Store it at home or with someone you trust, not in the same bag as the original. Ask a locksmith about making a spare while you still have a working key, since copying a working key is usually simpler than replacing one after every key is lost.

Watch the battery and the fob

If your key or fob uses a battery, replace it on schedule and handle it carefully. On some powersport keys, changing the battery incorrectly can cause the key to stop working, so ask a professional if you are unsure.

What to do if your only key is lost

If the key goes overboard or goes missing, do not force the ignition. A mobile locksmith who works on powersports and marine keys can often cut and program a replacement where your vehicle or vessel is parked. Bike N Boat Locksmith serves South Florida. Call (954) 932-0736 to get started.
