Case Study: Aircraft Key Replacement — Cessna 172 | Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE)
How Bike N Boat Locksmith Provided Mobile Aircraft Lock and Key Service at FXE — South Florida's Only Mobile Aircraft Locksmith
The Call
Robert, a private pilot and aircraft owner based at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (KFXE), contacted Bike N Boat Locksmith after discovering that his Cessna 172S's ignition key and door lock key were missing. He had last used the aircraft two days prior and believed the keys may have been left in his flight bag — which had since gone missing from his car after a break-in at a Doral parking lot.
The situation presented a dual concern: first, the practical problem of regaining access to the aircraft and producing replacement keys; second, the security concern that an unidentified person now possessed keys that could unlock the aircraft's door and turn the ignition. Replacing the locks was not just a convenience — it was a safety and liability priority.
Bike N Boat Locksmith responded to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and completed the full aircraft lock service on the ramp at the pilot's tie-down location. No hangar required. No shipping locks off for rekeying. No waiting days for a shop appointment.
The Aircraft and the Challenge
Aircraft: 2004 Cessna 172S Skyhawk SP
Location: Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (KFXE), Broward County, FL
Situation: Keys lost and potentially stolen — door lock and ignition lock both compromised
Locks Involved: Aircraft cabin door lock (Cessna 700 series) and ignition switch
Light general aviation aircraft — Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, Cirrus, and others — use mechanical lock systems that are fundamentally similar to automotive and marine lock systems, but with important differences in keyway profiles, lock construction, and regulatory context. Cessna aircraft in the 100 and 200 series (172, 182, 206, etc.) typically use a standardized lock system with a proprietary keyway.
The ignition lock on a Cessna 172 is a rotary switch that includes a key lock. It does not use an automotive-style transponder or immobilizer, which means it can be addressed with mechanical locksmithing techniques. The cabin door lock is a standard pin tumbler lock in a Cessna-specific housing.
The challenge in this case was not technical complexity — it was logistics. Most locksmiths have no experience working on aircraft, are not comfortable accessing ramp areas at controlled airports, and do not carry the correct key blanks or lock tools for aviation applications. Bike N Boat Locksmith holds ramp access capability at several South Florida airports and carries aviation-specific lock blanks and tooling as part of our specialty marine and aviation service division.
Our Approach
Step 1 — Airport Coordination and Ramp Access
Our technician coordinated with FXE operations for ramp access to the tie-down area. Robert met us at the main gate and escorted us to the aircraft. Ownership was verified via the aircraft registration (N-number and FAA registration document) before any work began. This verification step is non-negotiable — we do not perform aircraft lock services without confirmed proof of ownership or authorization.
Step 2 — Assessment of Existing Locks
We assessed both the cabin door lock and the ignition key switch. Both were in mechanically sound condition with no damage and no signs of forced entry. This confirmed that a rekey and new key production was the appropriate solution, rather than full lock replacement.
Step 3 — Ignition Key Production
Using the existing ignition keyway profile, our technician decoded the ignition lock cylinder to obtain the bitting code. A new key was cut to specification using a compatible aviation-grade blank and tested in the ignition. The ignition cycled correctly through all positions (OFF, R, L, BOTH, START).
Step 4 — Door Lock Rekey and New Key Production
The cabin door lock was removed, disassembled, and rekeyed to a new bitting code — deliberately different from the original code, so any key in the possession of the person who stole Robert's bag would no longer work. A new key was cut to match the rekeyed lock. The lock was reinstalled, the door tested from both inside and outside, and the locking mechanism confirmed to be operating smoothly.
Step 5 — Spare Key Production
Two additional spare key sets were cut — one for the ignition and one for the door. Robert was advised to store one set in a separate, secure location from the primary set and to consider a combination lockbox stored with a trusted FBO contact.
Total time on-site: approximately 90 minutes.
A Note on Aircraft Security
General aviation aircraft security does not receive enough attention. Many light aircraft, particularly older Cessna and Piper models, use simple mechanical locks with limited key variation. The broader aviation community has long acknowledged that the physical lock on a light aircraft is not the primary security layer. Securing the aircraft in a locked hangar, using a control lock or prop lock, and maintaining awareness of who has access to your keys are the practical security measures that matter most.
That said, when keys are lost or potentially stolen, rekeying the aircraft promptly is the correct response. Leaving compromised locks in service creates unnecessary liability — particularly in the context of aircraft theft or unauthorized flight, both of which do occur in South Florida's active general aviation environment.
Bike N Boat Locksmith takes aircraft lock services seriously. We verify ownership before touching any aircraft, we document every service, and we treat every job with the understanding that aviation is a regulated, safety-critical environment.

Frequently Asked Questions — Aircraft Lock and Key Services South Florida
Q: Can you come to my airport or tie-down location?
A: Yes. We service aircraft at tie-down locations, FBOs, and private hangars throughout South Florida. We currently serve Fort Lauderdale Executive (KFXE), North Perry Airport (KHWO), Pompano Beach Airpark (KPMP), Miami-Opa Locka Executive (KOPF), Miami Executive Airport (KTMB), Homestead General Aviation Airport (KHST), Boca Raton Airport (KBCT), Palm Beach International (KPBI — GA ramps), Lantana Airport (KLNA), and others by arrangement.
Q: Do I need to prove ownership before you will work on my aircraft?
A: Yes — always. We require the FAA aircraft registration document or equivalent proof of ownership or authorization before performing any lock service on an aircraft. This is a firm policy with no exceptions.
Q: Can you rekey an aircraft door lock if I have lost my keys?
A: Yes. For Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, and most other light GA aircraft with standard pin tumbler door locks, we can decode the existing lock or rekey it to a new combination, cut new keys, and have you operational without removing the aircraft from service.
Q: Can you help with a Cessna ignition key?
A: Yes. Cessna ignition keys are standard mechanical keys — no transponder, no electronic component. We can cut replacement ignition keys for most Cessna models from scratch.
Q: My aircraft has a Master Key — is that a security concern?
A: Yes, to a degree. Many older Cessna aircraft share a common master key that can operate any aircraft in the same key series. It is one of several reasons why a physical lock alone should not be your only security measure. We can discuss options with you on-site.
Q: Do you work on experimental or homebuilt aircraft?
A: It depends on the lock hardware installed. Many experimental aircraft use standard off-the-shelf lock cylinders from automotive or marine suppliers, which we can service readily. Call us with the specifics.
Q: How quickly can you respond to an airport in South Florida?
A: For most South Florida airports, we can typically respond within 45 to 75 minutes depending on current call volume and location.
